Learning from augmented reality
Employee training on-the-job. Always providing the latest information or work instructions.
Even with nobody around - no management, no trainers, no computer - at any location in the world.
Just a phone at hand and still able to learn.
On top, in this can be done in front of your customers, they will be impressed!
Is this possible? Yes, read this! Or if you want to experience this yourself, click here.
A driver arrives at your place to pick-up a parcel. You want to send a (dangerous goods) sample of your most successful product to one of your major prospects. Of course you want to make sure it arrives on-time, as you promised your potential customer.
As your product happens to be classified as hazardous or dangerous goods (DG), the legally required label for the appropriate DG-class has been placed on the parcel. You are unsure what the impact is to the transport of the parcel, so you ask the pick-up driver for more information and especially assurance of the delivery day and time.
The driver takes his smart phone and seems to take a picture of the DG label. He concentrates on the screen and you can see from a distance, menu buttons are appearing on the screen, on top of the DG-label.

The driver asks you what you want to know, whilst tapping on the "explain to customer" button.
"I'd like to understand when exactly this parcel will be delivered to my customer" you reply.
You can see a new window opens on the phone's screen. The driver starts reading from the screen:
"I'm afraid we cannot guarantee the delivery day or time for this dangerous goods shipment, because special and legally required processing steps prevent us from being able to actually state this. Its most likely tomorrow, but in the worst case could also be the day after".

The video shows some background, presented by Layar's Dutch founders (where did I hear that accent before?).
It provides some good 2D and 3D examples on the application of AR - augmented reality - and the rest will be down to your imagination and creativity. No doubt you will find some good applications, please share them via a comment below, or by linking via facebook, twitter, etc. |

The delivery company is using augmented reality, a new technology that allows multi layer information to be provided based on a scanned - real - object. This could be 2D (like the DG label) but also 3D, like a building (your office building?).
Can you imagine, one of your employees wants to learn/find out about a particular company related object (product, form, label, object, anything that can be captured in a picture), and just by scanning the object, any information you want can be provided.
This really opens a new universe for training on-the-job, and now that I have you thinking, just take a moment to move your thinking to other benefits:
More benefits and features can be found, but I'm sure you got the idea. For more information simply visit www.layar.com and you will find all the details. O, by the way, I think its really cheap to set this up and the app (iOS and Android) is of course for free,
By the way, if you happen to have my business card, scan it with the Layar app and see what more my business card can tell you. You will be surprised.
Want to see what the driver sees? Click here to get the simple instructions and explore the driver's menu on collecting a dangerous goods example.
Now you know, so at least reading this article creates an opportunity for you as well.
Enjoy exploring the future!

- The information referred to can be any webpage, email address, photo's, facebook link, etc.
Anything made available via a usual computer, can be made available here; - It ensures the latest and most actual information is always provided to the user; Information will never be outdated
- Employee learning takes place whilst customers are correctly informed at the same time and lets not forget, they get impressed;
- Information can be menu driven through buttons, no time wasted with finding information or checking on who has the latest on this subject;
- Not only in front of customers, I can think of a production environment and someone has a question on a particular object? e.g. what was the procedure again? Scan it with the Layar app and know it!
